Ansip signs treaty on entry into diplomatic relations with Comoros

Prime Minister Andrus Ansip and Fahmi Said Ibrahim, Foreign Minister of the Union of the Comoros, have signed a treaty on entry into diplomatic relations between the Republic of Estonia and the Union of the Comoros in Tripoli.

The ceremony took place during the third European Union-Africa summit. As of today, Estonia has diplomatic relations with more than 40 African states.

According to Prime Minister Ansip, diplomatic relations will give Estonia considerably greater chances to protect the interests of its citizens in Comoros.

The Union of the Comoros consists of three islands in the Indian Ocean between Mozambique and Madagascar, on the east coast of Africa. The population of the country is ca 750,000 people.

Also signed in Tripoli today was a joint declaration of Estonia and Somalia establishing the legal basis for the dispatching of Estonian ship protection crew on shipping defence operations to board vessels under the Somali flag.
