Stenbock House, 17 June 2021 – Prime Minister Kaja Kallas discussed with the President of Romania Klaus Iohannis, who is on a state visit, the intensification of transnational cooperation in the development of the information society and confirmed the readiness of Estonia to share its e-experiences.

Prime Minister Kallas gave President Iohannis an overview of the experience of developing the Estonian information society and activities in renewing state e-services with the aim of making them automatically triggered event services that are more user-friendly.

“People are spending more and more time in the virtual world and the state must provide services where its people are. It is important that e-services are convenient and simple, but also secure. That is why we are transforming state e-services into event services that would make everything smoother – the state must help people manage their daily affairs more conveniently and faster,” said Kallas.

With regards to the Three Seas Initiative, Kallas pointed out that the resulting opportunities should be better used to bring more transparent private investment in infrastructure in the region.

Kallas also talked about the digital summit in Tallinn in September. “Trust-based connectivity will be the main topic of the Tallinn Digital Summit this year,” the Prime Minister said, expressing hope that her Romanian counterpart, Prime Minister Florin Cîțu, would be able to attend the summit.

Kallas and Iohannis also spoke about the outcome of the NATO summit earlier this week and emphasised the importance of a message of solidarity and unity in the context of transatlantic relations. “Estonia and Romania share similar views on security issues. We are pleased that the NATO summit confirmed the unity of the alliance and the importance of transatlantic relations,” said Kallas.

Speaking of EU cooperation, the focus was on the Council meeting taking place next week. The Prime Minister and the President both emphasised the unity of the European Union and also talked about global foreign policy issues, including the role of the foreign policy of the European Union in the world, as well as relations with Russia and China.
