Prime Minister Andrus Ansip attends a European Council meeting

Tallinn, Stenbock House, 18 December 2013 – Prime Minister Andrus Ansip travels today to Brussels to attend a European Council meeting. The EU summit on Thursday and Friday focuses on security issues and economic and financial policy matters. Among the main issues for debate are the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy and long-term defence cooperation. The meeting focuses on common defence capabilities and the defence industry. Growing attention is paid to cyber defence – the EU Cyber Defence Policy Framework is due to be developed by 2014. Estonia considers adequate funding of the defence policy, improvement of the usability of Battlegroups and the development of common defence market as important. The European Council will also discuss the Commission’s annual growth survey, further steps for coordinating Member States’ economic policies and the Single Resolution Mechanism for the Banking Union. The Prime Minister will return to Estonia late on Friday night. For further information, contact: Inga Bowden, Government Communication Unit, phone 52 81 467
