Brussels, 23 October – Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas said that it is unacceptable if the members of the Government or other leading politicians make statements, which may be understood as ethnicity-based insults.

“Jürgen Ligi’s post on Facebook was inappropriate and its deletion and public apologising are certainly justified,” Rõivas said. “This statement was unacceptable despite the fact that also the trivialisation of the consequences of Soviet occupation bears offensive undertone for many Estonians.”

The Prime Minister added that instead of hurling insults at each other, the Government needs to focus on increasing the coherence of the society: “I have repeatedly said that Estonia needs more tolerance and understanding and I stand by that view.”
