Prime minister met with a delegation from the United States' Congress

Tallinn, Stenbock HouseAugust 1, 2002Prime Minister Siim Kallas and State Secretary Aino Lepik von Wiren met today with a high-level delegation from the US Congress lead by House of Representatives member David Dreier. The meeting focused on issues related to the Estonian economy. Aino Lepik von Wiren introduced to the US Congress members the State Chancellery and the government electronic sitting system VIIS. During the meeting Siim Kallas emphasized the importance of the current year in the light of Estonia integrating with NATO and the EU.The US Congress delegation recognized Estonia's well-developed free market economy, stressing the importance of small enterprises. Likewise, the Congress members closely studied the Estonian income tax system and the taxation of special benefits in the public sector.The prime minister as well as the members of Congress realized that there is a great deal that could be learned from each other, and that cooperation between the USA and Estonia could continue more than previously on the level of small enterprises and between business people.Government Press Office
