Stenbock House, 20 December 2016 – Prime Minister Jüri Ratas met today with Michel Barnier, the former Vice-President of the European Commission and the European Union's chief Brexit negotiator.

Prime Minister Ratas stressed that Estonia considered it essential to maintain a relationship that is as close as possible with the UK after its withdrawal from the EU. “A close relationship between the UK and the EU is a matter of common interest. The United Kingdom is and will remain an important European country in both political and economic terms and an essential partner in the field of security. However, there are no benefits without responsibilities – access to the internal market is linked to full acceptance of the four fundamental freedoms,” said Ratas.

According to Ratas, it is crucial to maintain the unity of the 27 member states, both during and after the Brexit negotiations. “I hope that the process of the UK leaving the EU will be as smooth as possible. While the European Commission is leading the Brexit negotiations, we will cooperate closely on a day-to-day basis during the negotiations and in the course of preparing political decisions,” said Ratas.
