Stenbock House, August 24, 2015 - Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas said today at a meeting with the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini that the European Union must remain unified and alert to cope with any kind of threats.

Prime Minister Rõivas and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Mogherini focused on the conflict in Ukraine and EU security at their meeting. In spite of the various crises all around the globe, we must not forget that there is a war going on in the immediate vicinity of the EU border, Rõivas said.

"The conflict in Ukraine is far from over; in fact, we can see that it is continuing with renewed intensity," Rõivas remarked, inviting Mogherini to continue her active focusing on the conflict in Ukraine and to keep the lessons of Ukraine in mind when working on the new security strategy for the EU.

According to Rõivas, Estonia understands the value of solidarity very well and shares the concerns that other security threats such as the migration crisis and terrorism are causing in Europe. "Estonia contributes to cope with these threats," Rõivas said, noting the example of Estonian troops participating in the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon with the main aim of maintaining stability in the region and decreasing the flow of migrants to Europe.

Prime Minister thanked Mogherini for her support statement to free Eston Kohver and stressed that pressure on the Russian Federation must continue until Eston Kohver is back at home with his family.

Rõivas also expressed hope that Mogherini will raise the issue of releasing Estonian ship guards imprisoned in India at the next EU summit.
