The prime minister welcomes defence cooperation with Turkey

Tallinn, Stenbock HouseAugust 14, 2002Prime Minister Kallas met today with the high-level delegation from the Turkish National Defence Ministry led by Sabahattin Cakmakoglu, the Minister of National Defence.The prime minister commended Turkey for its steady support for Estonia´s integration with NATO. "We appreciate Turkey as a strong advocate of NATO expansion and Turkey´s readiness to cooperate in different areas, particularly in defence issues," said Kallas.According to Cakmakoglu, Turkey is gladly willing to share their experiences with their region and peace operations worldwide with Estonia.According to Kallas, Estonia has a lot to learn from Turkey´s experiences. The prime minister expressed pleasure about the defence cooperation agreement with Turkey to be signed tomorrow. At the meeting, the stability of good Estonian-Turkish relations was acknowledged. This has been proven by the several high-level visits recently: the last being Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Necdet Sezer´s visit to Estonia in April.
