Brussels, 15 December 2016 – Prime Minister Jüri Ratas said ahead of the European Council meeting that the Ukraine-European Union Association Agreement is fundamental for both parties.
“We must find a way to make the entry into force of the Ukraine-European Union Association Agreement possible,” said Prime Minister Ratas. “The objective of the agreement is to support the efforts of Ukraine in implementing political and economic reforms. The people of Ukraine have made a clear choice regarding their future and have fought and worked hard towards it. They deserve this opportunity.”
According to the Prime Minister, the Council meeting will also focus on cooperation in the field of defence that has been previously side-lined.
“Ensuring peace and stability in Europe is our joint task. We must cooperate more. All of us separately, as well as together must invest in defence more than we have done this far,” said Ratas.
“I assure that my Government will continue to contribute to defence expenditure with even more than 2% of the GDP.” Prime Minister Ratas also emphasised the importance of enhancing cooperation between the European Union and NATO.
