Stenbock House, 21 September 2014 – Tomorrow, Resistance Fighting Day will be celebrated in Estonia.

On Monday morning at 7.05, the flag board of Tallinn School No. 21 will hoist the Estonian flag on the Pikk Hermann tower. After the hoisting of the flag, the pupils will meet the members of the Riigikogu. Additionally, the pupils will meet freedom fighter Vello Salo under the class of civics and citizenship.

At 9, wreaths will be placed at the foot of the War of Independence Victory Column by Estonian people. This will be followed by a tribute of academic student organisations to the members of the Government of Otto Tief at the Tallinn Metsakalmistu Cemetery at 10, where candles will be lit at the monument of Tief’s Government.

A street parade of academic organisations will take place at 18.30 in the evening, culminating in a meeting at Freedom Square at 19.

Additionally, a memorial service for the heads of state will take place in the Dome Church of Haapsalu at 18.

22 September is celebrated as a national holiday under the name of Resistance Fighting Day and Otto Tief’s Government Day with the Resolution of the Riigikogu for the seventh year. Tief’s Government marked the beginning of the operating of the Government of the Republic of Estonia in exile, which provided an additional political and judicial argument at the beginning of the 1990s to restore the Republic of Estonia based on continuity. The formation of Otto Tief’s Government is a symbolic step in Estonia’s independence efforts and the fight against foreign domination.

The overthrow of the legitimate Government of the Republic of Estonia on 22 September 1944 is acknowledged with the celebration of Resistance Fighting Day. Otto Tief’s Government was appointed by Prime Minister acting as President Jüri Uluots under the Constitution of the Republic of Estonia. Although the Government declared neutrality in World War II, the blue-black-and-white could be flown on the Pikk Hermann tower for only a few days.
