“The government’s decision means that we are progressing faster than before in building up Estonia’s defence capabilities – that applies to the army, the air force, as well as the navy,” said Prime Minister Kristen Michal. “Over the next four years, 2.8 billion euros will be added to defence spending. This is the largest increase in defence spending in recent history, which will allow us to develop Estonia’s air defence faster, increase the army’s firepower, create a deep-warfare capability, and place significant emphasis on the development of drone and electronic warfare.”
In developing Estonia’s defence capabilities, the government will be guided by the military advice of the Commander of the Defence Forces, which includes the experiences of the war in Ukraine in addition to the capability targets set by NATO.
“Behind every capacity development are calculations and market research of what we will be able to do in the coming years to develop our defence capabilities in the current difficult security situation,” said Minister of Defence Hanno Pevkur. “In addition to the development of our air force, army, and navy, we are also putting a strong emphasis on people and developing the part of the defence force that you do not see in the parades – large-scale infrastructure works, cyber defence, drones, the development of electronic warfare, etc. With today’s agreements, Estonia is firmly protected and confirms its unwavering commitment to NATO.”
