The Government decides to accept US request to take in a Guantanamo detainee

Stenbock House, 9 October 2014 – Today, the Government made a decision in principle to accept a request from the US and receive a Guantanamo detainee who has not been convicted of a crime.  Some inmates released from Guantanamo cannot return to their home countries because of a great risk to their security.  By receiving a released inmate from Guantanamo, Estonia demonstrates its willingness to contribute to the US strategy to close the detention camp. The person to be received will be selected by Estonia.
