“NATO and its member states have good defence plans, but these will not work without real action. If we want Russia to take us seriously, we need to back up our words with concrete actions and increase defence spending to at least 2.5% of GDP in all NATO member states,” said the Estonian prime minister.
“The absolute priority for Europe must be to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. For Ukraine, this means membership of both the European Union and NATO. Estonia is a strong supporter of Ukraine’s enlargement, and we hope that the momentum will continue during the Polish Presidency,” said Kristen Michal.
The prime minister added that to deter the aggressor, the Russian war machine must be targeted where impact against it is greatest – it must be deprived of energy export revenues. “Our goals must be to end the avoidance of sanctions and to find solutions to use frozen Russian assets for the reconstruction of Ukraine,” said Kristen Michal. “I have high expectations for the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union and look forward to a strong economic sanctions package against Russia.”
In addition, the prime minister pointed out that the critical military capabilities of Europe, such as air defence and ammunition stockpiles, require a common approach between countries. “Estonia and Poland are at the forefront of investing in defence, and Estonia has also proposed to issue defence bonds,” he said.
The prime ministers discussed the common defence of cyberspace and information space. “I welcome Poland’s proposal to expand cooperation. This is, inter alia, an opportunity to showcase the relevant capabilities of Estonia, including the activities of the Cyber Defence League,” Michal said.
The prime ministers also stressed the importance of cross-border connections. “Quality connections are key for both Estonia and Poland,” said Kristen Michal. “The main Rail Baltic route from Tallinn to Warsaw will be ready by 2030 and will benefit both our economy and security,” the prime minister said.
