“Estonia is targeting defence spending at five percent of gross domestic product (GDP). The decisions that were made yesterday help us achieve this goal faster,” said Prime Minister Kristen Michal. “Together, we can count on up to 800 billion euros to boost the defence capabilities of the European Union and help Ukraine,” he said.
According to the prime minister, it is important that at the Special European Council, Member States recognised that the threat behind the eastern border is real and that everyone must invest more in defence. “In particular, it is important to invest in critical capabilities such as air defence, ammunition procurement, and long-range firepower,” he added.
European Union leaders met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday. “We reaffirmed our full support for Ukraine in the war against Russian agressioon and we stand ready to make a greater joint contribution to help Ukraine to a position of strength. Estonia is considering opportunities for closer cooperation with Ukraine, especially in the production of drones,” said Kristen Michal.
