The Estonian prime minister expressed strong support for Armenia’s course towards reform: “You have firmly chosen the path of strengthening relations with the European Union. Estonia supports you in this. Make the most of the process. Reforms bring tangible benefits, first and foremost to your own people. Our own experience 20 years ago can confirm this,” he said. Michal also reaffirmed Estonia’s commitment to extending the support mechanisms of the EU to Armenia and to advancing the visa dialogue.
Michal welcomed the consensus reached between Armenia and Azerbaijan on the text of the peace agreement and expressed hope that it could be signed soon.
The meeting addressed practical cooperation in the field of building a digital state, education, and economic development in Armenia. “In December last year, we reached the point in Estonia where all our public services are now 100% digital. We will continue to work on cutting red tape and reducing reporting burdens. We are bringing AI into schools to prepare young people for an ever faster changing labour market. It is an honour that the experience of Estonia is helping to shape the future-oriented digital state of Armenia,” said the Estonian prime minister.
He cited as a positive example of the cooperation a project led by Estonian company Proud Engineers, which automates the exchange of data between the Armenian tax authorities and banks. Estonia is also helping to train Armenian teachers and bring innovation to the education sector of the country. The Estonian Centre for International Development (ESTDEV) supports the diversification of the Armenian economy and private sector experts advise Armenian small and medium-sized enterprises on strengthening their export capacity. According to Michal, even closer communication and clearer priorities will help to broaden cooperation and take it forward.
Michal also emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine and putting more pressure on Russia, which continues to conduct attacks causing significant civilian casualties.
