“Good work has been done in planning the security guarantees of Ukraine since the meeting in Washington. We will continue these discussions today,” said the Estonian prime minister before the meeting. “It is worth noting that the greatest supporters and closest friends of Ukraine are meeting on the same day when Putin is attending a military parade with his autocratic friends,” he added.
“Ukraine desires peace and has demonstrated readiness to negotiate with Russia to achieve this,” said Michal. “Russia does not want peace. Instead, brutal attacks against Ukraine continue. Putin has not agreed to establish a ceasefire or make any compromises.”
According to the head of the Estonian government, Ukraine must be involved in the discussions on the road towards just and lasting peace. “Nothing concerning Ukraine will be agreed on without Ukraine. This makes the face-to-face discussion with President Zelenskyy especially valuable,” explained Michal.
The prime minister also confirmed that the Nordic and Baltic countries will continue to show unwavering support of Ukraine. “Based on ratios, we are the greatest supporters of Ukraine as a region, as well as by countries, and the biggest contributors to our defence. We will carry on in the same vein,” he said. “We support Ukrainian sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity unwaveringly,” Michal stressed.
The meeting of the leaders of the Baltic and Nordic countries and the Ukrainian President takes place at the residence of the Prime Minister of Denmark in Marienborg. Denmark holds the presidency of the NB8 format this year.
