“The foundation for just and lasting peace in Ukraine is certainty in security guarantees. The first and strongest line of defence is Ukraine’s military and their capabilities. Their training and equipment will determine Russia’s future decisions,” said Prime Minister Kristen Michal. The second line of defence is the coalition’s participation in monitoring peace in Ukraine together with the US, as well as on-site training and logistics. Estonia intends to participate in this, and we will be asking the Riigikogu for a mandate for a foreign mission,” he said.
“The third are US security guarantees for Ukraine’s future, which have the mandate of the administration and the legislator. With the other two lines of defence, they will ensure that Russia will not make the mistake of going to war again in the future. These three layers of security work together and form a safety net that can be relied upon as discussions regarding the peace plan continue,” Michal said.
The United States supports the Coalition of the Willing with intelligence and logistics, among other things, in the event of a military attack.
According to Michal, these measures will only be implemented once active military hostilities have ceased.
The prime minister also emphasised that Russia is only prepared to engage in serious negotiations if the combined pressure on them continues and increases. To this end, sanctions must be swiftly implemented, including restrictions on Russia’s fossil fuel revenues.
As a result of today’s meeting, the Paris Declaration was adopted, which describes in detail the agreements reached and announces the decision to establish a centre coordinating cooperation between the United States, Ukraine, and the Coalition of the Willing at the Coalition Operational Headquarters in Paris.
