Sweden has stood by Estonia during several crucial moments of our history. You were the first to appoint an ambassador in 1991. Just two days after recognizing our restored independence. That trust has only deepened over time. Today, we are close partners in the EU, and NATO. We work hard for the security and wellbeing of our region. We always feel your support when it matters most. Including on September 19th, when Russian fighter jets violated our airspace.
Let me make three brief points.
First, our bilateral cooperation is excellent and growing. Estonia’s focus is clear: security and growth. And Sweden is central to both. You are among our top trading and investment partners. When your economy grows, Estonia feels it too.
We see real potential in defence industry cooperation. Estonia’s defence sector is our fastest growing sector. I’m glad that Swedish companies see the opportunities. We offer a strong base for high-tech manufacturing, cybersecurity, and emerging defence technologies from our drones to sensors. We are keen to expand work in AI and digital innovation.
Another good example of practical cooperation is the Tartu prison rental agreement. Talks have been very constructive, and we hope ratification will move ahead smoothly.
At home, we are reducing bureaucracy and boosting growth. We share Sweden’s view that Europe must do the same – a stronger Single Market, fewer rules, and more results.
A competitive and secure Europe benefits us all.
Second, on Nordic-Baltic cooperation.
Next year, Estonia will chair the Nordic-Baltic group. I look forward to welcoming you to Tallinn next June for the Nordic-Baltic Prime Ministers’ Meeting. We’ll do our best to continue the excellent work Sweden did in 2024.
Our cooperation has reached a new level. It is more effective than ever. Together, the Nordic-Baltic region is a major force: the world’s 10th largest economy, home to 33 million people, united by shared values, innovation, and digital leadership. We face the same security challenges, and we act together.
As top supporters of Ukraine, we have influence. Ukraine counts on us, and we use this influence wisely.
Third, Ukraine and regional security.
Estonia and Sweden share the view that Russia is a threat to peace and security in our region. We continue to support Ukraine politically, militarily, and financially. Estonia keeps its commitment to allocate 0,25% of GDP in annual military aid to Ukraine. This year it has been 0,3%.´Sweden’s decision to allow Ukraine to acquire Gripen jets is a real gamechanger.
But lasting change comes from pressure.
Sanctions work, so we must move quickly with the 20th package. Let’s keep targeting Russian fossil exports and the shadow fleet. This is a danger to both our security and environment.
I’m glad we have real progress on using frozen Russian assets. Ukraine needs these funds now. And our message is clear – the aggressor must pay. Russia cannot get its money back before it has compensated all the damage.
Together, we’ll help Ukraine to achieve just and lasting peace on its own terms.
