Prime Minister Kallas meeting with Chancellor of Germany Merkel

Stenbock House, 17 August 2021 – Today, Prime Minister Kaja Kallas is visiting Berlin, where she will be meeting with Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel.

According to Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, Germany is a very close friend and ally to Estonia. ‘We are close allies with Germany and cooperate closely together in Europe, in NATO, as well as on an international level in the broader context. During the visit, we will be focusing on riskier issues concerning security and climate policy, while also addressing cooperation in the economic and digital field. The visit will also provide an opportunity to thank Chancellor Angela Merkel for her work and commitment in bringing our two countries closer together, and for Germany’s contribution to the security of the Baltic Sea region,’ Prime Minister Kallas noted.

At the meeting, Kallas and Merkel will focus on European security, including topics related to Belarus and Russia, as well as the events taking place in Afghanistan. They will also address EU climate policy and the cooperation of the two countries in the digital field.

After today’s meeting, the Prime Minister and the Chancellor will hold a joint press conference at 14:30, Estonian time, which can be viewed via online broadcast at: www.bundesregierung.de

Prime Minister Kallas will also be meeting with various German entrepreneurs to discuss the recovery of the German economy from the coronavirus crisis, and to encourage them to look for cooperation opportunities by investing in Estonia.

Prime Minister Kallas will arrive back in Estonia this evening.
