The bottlenecks faced by the technology sector were raised at the meeting, during which proposals were put forward as to how the state could show even more support for the sector’s development. Issues discussed included obstacles to hiring foreign workers, the funding of higher education, regulations on the taxation of options, the creation of favourable conditions for investment in research and development and opportunities to contribute to advances in the next-generation Internet.
Prime Minister Kallas said the meeting highlighted a number of ways in which the government could be of help to companies in developing products and services with high added value and export potential. She added that a number of the proposals were already being worked on, while others needed more detailed analysis.
Close to 11,000 companies were operating in the technology sector in Estonia in 2021, with a combined turnover of almost five billion euros. It is hoped that the sector will be contributing as much as one third of Estonia’s GDP by 2030.
