“You are the gold standard of the Estonian Defence Forces: professional, reliable, and valued by our allies and the international community.”
The head of government stressed that serving in foreign missions is not merely a contribution to global security, but a direct contribution to Estonia’s own defence. “In today’s world, there is no such thing as too much security,” he stated. “Your work in the Red Sea and the Mediterranean, in Iraq and Mozambique has helped prevent conflicts from reaching our doorstep. Your commitment reinforces Estonia’s defence capabilities each and every day.”
Prime Minister Michal added that the security environment remains complex. “The war in Europe is now in its fourth year, and achieving a just and lasting peace in Ukraine is a difficult task,” he said. “There has been no end to the conflicts in Iraq and the African region either. That is why we are significantly increasing Estonia’s military preparedness: our defence spending will soon rise to more than 5% of GDP.”
The head of government also thanked the friends and families of the soldiers, whose serving far from home relies on their support and understanding. “Knowing that your loved ones stand by you makes everything more secure,” he remarked. “Estonia is free and secure thanks to your work and commitment.”
Today’s reception was attended by members of the Defence Forces who have served in the operations Inherent Resolve, Brilliant Shield and NATO Mission Iraq (NMI), the EU operations Aspides and EUMAM Mozambique, and the UN peacekeeping mission UNIFIL. Commander of the Defence League Major General Ilmar Tamm also attended the event, at which Company Commander Captain Mart Voolaid gave a speech.
