Brussels, 6 March 2025 – On Thursday, Prime Minister Kristen Michal will attend the Special European Council in Brussels aimed at increasing support for Ukraine and improving Europe’s own defence capabilities.

“No one wants peace more than the Ukrainians themselves. But for that peace to be just and lasting, we need first strength, then peace. A critical majority of European countries understand that we need to act urgently,” said Michal.

According to the prime minister, it is also crucial to keep pressuring Russia and to proceed with using frozen Russian assets.

The meeting will involve discussions on the increase in military assistance to Ukraine, including an ambitious initiative by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas to rapidly provide Ukraine with ammunition, air defence, and equipment. Other topics include significantly boosting Europe’s defence investments, including proposals published by the European Commission on Tuesday.

Upon his return to Estonia on Friday, 7 March, the prime minister will brief journalists at Stenbock House at 3 p.m. Please let us know of your interest in attending no later than at 10 a.m. on Friday by sending a message or calling Jevgenia Värä, Media Advisor to the Government, at +372 5254377. Attendees need to arrive by 2.50 p.m. We recommend that you bring a microphone stand with a long handle.
