“Estonian–US relations are close and comprehensive and there are many shared areas of interest. I thanked President Biden for the leadership role of the United States in climate diplomacy. We focused on the importance of transatlantic cooperation and strengthening the deterrence capability of NATO. I thanked the United States for the security assistance and emphasized the importance of its continuation,” said Kallas, summing up the main topics of the meeting.
“I emphasized to President Biden that in addition to the growing threats in Asia, it is important to keep the focus on the security of Europe and especially the Baltic states – our eastern neighbour is behaving unpredictably and the direction of development is not encouraging,” added Kallas.
Kallas also thanked Joe Biden for the invitation to the Summit for Democracy to be held in December. “This is a very timely initiative because democracies need to improve their joint readiness to resist the aspirations of authoritarian states of establishing new global rules of the game. Estonia can offer specific steps on how to increase co-operation between democracies, for example in the field of creating a global digital infrastructure,” said the Prime Minister.
The last time Kallas and Biden met was during the NATO summit in the summer. Tomorrow, Prime Minister Kaja Kallas will take part in the summit on reducing methane emissions convened by the President of the United States and the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.
